5 Expert Tips for Maintaining Oral Hygiene

Toothbrush, floss and mouthwash arranged for daily oral hygiene

1) Brush the right way (twice daily, 2 minutes)

Use a soft-bristle brush and fluoride toothpaste. Angle bristles 45° to the gumline (modified Bass technique), use gentle, short strokes, and cover all surfaces. Don’t scrub—let bristles glide.

  • 2 minutes total: ~30s per quadrant
  • Pea-sized fluoride paste for adults; rice-grain for kids
  • Replace brush/heads every 3 months or after illness
  • Electric brushes with a pressure sensor prevent over-brushing
  • Brush gently along the gumline—plaque hides there
  • Finish by lightly brushing palate and inner cheeks

2) Clean between teeth (daily)

Toothbrush bristles don’t reach tight contacts. Use floss (C-shape against each tooth) or interdental brushes (especially around braces and bridges). Water flossers can help if you have limited dexterity or complex dental work.

3) Don’t skip the tongue & consider mouthwash

Most halitosis originates on the tongue. Use a scraper or your brush from back to front. Choose an alcohol-free fluoride mouthwash, swish for 30 seconds, and avoid rinsing with water right after to keep fluoride working.

4) Diet, timing & hydration matter

Frequency rule: It’s not only what you eat—it’s how often. Frequent snacking and sugary drinks keep mouth pH low and fuel cavities. Keep sweets/acidic items to mealtimes; rinse with water after.
  • Limit sticky sweets and frequent sipping
  • Chew sugar-free xylitol gum after meals
  • Hydrate—dry mouth increases decay risk

5) If you wear braces or aligners

  • Use interdental brushes under wires and around brackets
  • Aligners: rinse trays with cool water; brush gently (no hot water)
  • Avoid hard, sticky foods that can dislodge brackets
