The Importance of Regular Dental Check-ups

Dentist examining a patient's teeth during a routine check-up

Why regular visits matter

  • Early detection of cavities and gum disease before pain begins
  • Identification of bite problems and tooth wear
  • Screening for oral cancer and mucosal changes
  • Personalised advice on hygiene, diet and habit correction
Prevention pays: Addressing tiny problems early avoids complex treatments later.

What happens during a professional check-up

  1. Medical & dental history update
  2. Visual exam of teeth, gums, tongue and cheeks
  3. Periodontal assessment for bleeding or pocketing
  4. X-rays when indicated to detect hidden decay or bone loss
  5. Professional cleaning: scaling, stain removal and polishing
  6. Fluoride or desensitising treatment if necessary
  7. Written plan with findings, priorities and cost options

How often should you come?

Most healthy adults do well with every 6 months. We may recommend 3–4 months for high-risk patients (gum disease, diabetes, smokers, orthodontic treatment) and up to 12 months for very low risk. We individualise your recall schedule after the exam.

Kids, adults & special situations

  • Children: first visit by age one or within 6 months of first tooth; fluoride advice and sealants for molars.
  • Braces/aligners: more frequent reviews for hygiene and appliance checks. See Orthodontics.
  • Seniors: monitor wear, dry mouth, dentures and root caries.
  • Medical conditions: diabetes, pregnancy, reflux and certain medications increase risk—tell us so we can help.

How check-ups save money & time

Small cavities can be restored quickly and inexpensively. Delayed care can lead to root canals, crowns or extractions—far more complex and costly. Prevention and early intervention are always gentler on your smile and your wallet.
